AMAZONITE
Amazonite is a beautiful green to blue-green variety of the mineral microcline, a member of the feldspar family. Its name is derived from the Amazon River, although no significant deposits have actually been found there. Amazonite is known for its soothing, vibrant color – often compared to turquoise or jade – and its distinctive light-colored, schiller effect (a faint shimmer caused by internal crystal structures).
Key Characteristics:
Color – Bright green, teal, aqua blue-green, sometimes with white or pale streaks.
Hardness – 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale (moderately durable, suitable for jewelry with care).
Luster – Vitreous to waxy (polished pieces often have a soft, glossy shine).
Transparency – Translucent to opaque.
Schiller effect – Many amazonite pieces display a subtle, iridescent sparkle caused by light reflecting off internal mineral inclusions.
Metaphysical & Healing Properties:
Amazonite is widely known as the "Stone of Courage" and "Stone of Truth". Its cool, calming energy is associated with:
Calm & clarity – Believed to soothe the nervous system, reduce worry, and bring mental clarity.
Communication – Strongly linked to the throat chakra and heart chakra, helping to speak truth with compassion and express emotions honestly.
Harmony & balance – Encourages balance between masculine and feminine energies, and between logic and intuition.
Hope & optimism – Known to dispel despair, trauma, and fear, replacing them with hope and a positive outlook.
Manifestation – Often used to help align personal will with universal truth, supporting goal-setting and follow-through.
Common Uses:
Jewelry – Pendants, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and rings. Its beautiful color makes it a popular alternative to turquoise.
Meditation – Held or placed on the throat or heart area to promote clear communication and emotional healing.
Home & office decor – Tumbled stones or carved pieces are placed in living or workspaces to create a calm, harmonious environment.
Energy grids – Used in crystal grids for truth, balance, or stress relief.
Care Instructions:
Cleaning – Wash with mild soap, warm water, and a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
Chemicals – Keep away from perfumes, lotions, and harsh detergents, as amazonite is sensitive to chemicals.
Sunlight exposure – Prolonged direct sunlight may cause the color to fade over time.
Physical impact – Due to its moderate hardness (6–6.5), amazonite can chip or scratch if struck hard. Store separately from harder gemstones.
Recharging – Can be recharged in moonlight or on a selenite plate. Avoid salt water.
Interesting Facts:
Despite its name, no amazonite has actually been found in the Amazon River region. Major sources include Russia (especially the Ilmen Mountains), USA (Colorado and Virginia), Madagascar, Brazil, and Canada.
The ancient Egyptians used amazonite for jewelry, amulets, and carvings, including in King Tutankhamun's tomb.
Amazonite is often mistaken for turquoise or jade due to its similar color, but it is more affordable and has a distinctive schiller effect.
It is the traditional birthstone for Libra (♎︎) and is associated with the zodiac signs Virgo and Sagittarius.
"Like a calm pool of tropical water, amazonite brings courage, truth, and a gentle sense of peace – making it a beautiful companion for anyone seeking to speak their heart and live in harmony."
