SMOKY QUARTZ
Smoky quartz is a brown to gray variety of quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂) that gets its distinctive color from natural irradiation of aluminum-containing quartz crystals. The color ranges from pale, smoky gray to deep, dark brown — almost black. It is one of the most abundant and affordable quartz varieties, prized for both its beauty and grounding energy.
Key Features:
Color: Light smoky gray to dark brownish-gray or nearly black (the darkest variety is sometimes called morion).
Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale (durable, ideal for daily wear).
Luster: Vitreous (glassy).
Transparency: Transparent to translucent.
Crystal Habit: Forms hexagonal prisms with pyramidal terminations (typical quartz structure).
Special Property: The color is caused by natural radiation (from surrounding radioactive minerals) over millions of years — not heat or chemical treatment (though heat can remove the color).
Where It's Found:
Major sources include Brazil (the largest producer), Switzerland (famous Alpine crystals), Madagascar, Scotland (known as "cairngorm"), United States (Colorado, Maine), Australia, Russia, and Zambia.
Uses:
Jewelry: Widely used in rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets, and beads — its neutral color pairs well with both silver and gold.
Ornamental: Carved into spheres, pyramids, towers, and wands; also popular for crystal lamps and obelisks.
Metaphysical / Crystal Healing:
Known as the "Stone of Power" or "Grounding Stone" .
Believed to absorb and transmute negative energy, relieve stress, and release emotional blockages.
Associated with the root chakra — helping to ground energy, promote stability, and enhance survival instincts.
Often used in meditation for deep relaxation and protection against electromagnetic smog (from phones, computers, etc.).
